how to avoid Instagram comparison

32d097d94a81da3185955d4daa1e7eaeHey ladies,

For graduation, your parents bought you some beautiful flowers and a wrote you a sweet card. You were absolutely amazed with their kindness and felt an overflow of love from your family on this special day. Later that night, you get on instagram…maybe even to post about this generous act your parents did for you… when you start scrolling through your newsfeed and see everyone else’s photos from their graduation. One friend got a new car, one got a pet, and another friend got some designer shoes you have also been craving. Another friend got the new Michael Kors watch while another got a new Tory Burch bag. Suddenly, your flimsy flowers and little card don’t seem to be as thoughtful or special anymore. In a few days, your flowers will die and who cares about a card, right? But, your friends’ material items will last them months, if not years! Suddenly, instead of feeling grateful for what you have, you start comparing yourself and your life to your friends and now don’t feel as awesome as you did before. Subsequently, you are not thankful for what your parents gave you and might even resent them for not giving you what would give you 200+ likes on your instagram photo.

Taken from simplyglamstyle this expert for sure brings up some thoughts. Aren’t we all a bit guilty of comparing ourselves with those lovely and very beautiful pictures from our instagram feed? We tell ourselves that nobody is perfect, but then again those pictures do look perfect. Why can’t my life be as perfect, as organized, as pretty and as successful as theirs. We wonder how come those children taken on that particular picture always look so tidy and put together, why cant mine be like that. Or we look at some home styles and wonder why cant my home be as glam and neat as this one. The travelling, the adventures, the children, the beauty, the parties, the dresses…etc. We constantly are put up to the challenge of not comparing our life, that looks way less exciting and glamorous than their flawless one. It is a never ending comparison story that even without wanting creeps into our brains.
A picture is worth a thousand words, right? yes but remember that it is still just a picture. What we see is just a fraction of what is going on in their lives. We do not know or see all their challenges, fears, aggravation or hardships which i am sure they have. We just assume it is all perfect.

Here are a few tips on how to stay balanced and grateful for what we have.

1. COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS

Try to really focus on all the many good things you have in life. Your family, love, home, job, children, friends the list goes on and on32eac0307b69a8c1f1a1e7a3a18ea042

2. MAKE YOUR OWN MEMORIES

Start capturing your own memories. And no you do not have to share it on social media to feel good about it. Take real pictures, display them, hang them up so you could be reminded of it

3. FEEL THE LOVE

There is no better feeling than being loved and giving love. Is it your friends, your family or your children. Nobody could compare this to anything and it is so much more satisfying than all the material things we run after. Mentally remind yourselves that and enjoy the moments. No do not grab your phone to capture that, just feel it

4. SPENT MORE TIME IN NATURE

Nature has a way of balancing us. It keeps our head clear and reminds us what the purpose of our life is. Seeing Nature taking its routinely course of life gives us a sense of peacefulness. Spent time being outdoors and pause to think. No phones allowed;)

5. JUST BE YOU!

You are the way you are and you should embrace that. You were put in this world not to be someone else, and not to live someone-elses life, but to just be you with everything around it. Enjoy it!

Next time you get those sneaky little thoughts of jealousy or comparing take those steps to get rid of them. I hope they help you as much as they helped me. I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic.

Until soon
Xx – Toby
